The Historic Carlton Hotel Has New Ownership
ATASCADERO — After being for sale for a little over a year, the historic Carlton Hotel sold to the father/son team of Robert and Kamal Patel, known as Capricorn Property Group. The group is a family-owned business out of the San Francisco Bay Area, which has been in the hotel business for the last 40 years, with roots in San Luis Obispo for just as long.
Goldie Meryl Kretchmer 1929-2023
Goldie Meryl Kretchmer, age 94, passed away peacefully at home on September 27, 2023. Goldie was born in East St. Louis, Illinois, in 1929. Her parents were Oliver and Goldie Milner. She had two siblings, Richard and Glenn. When she was a teenager, the family moved to the Glendale/Burbank area, where she graduated from Hoover High School. She met the love of her life, Robert Kretchmer, at the Palladium Ballroom in Hollywood, and they married three months later. They moved to San Luis Obispo County, where he graduated from Cal Poly. After settling in Garden Farms, they built their home and welcomed three daughters. They started a masonry business, Bob’s Bricklaying Service, with Meryl filling the role of office manager/bookkeeper. Meryl worked in the medical records department at Atascadero State Hospital for 12 years, a job she loved and made many lifelong friends. Meryl was a very loving, amazing woman, still very active into her 90s, enjoying walks around the neighborhood, visiting with neighbors, yoga classes, and yard work.
First annual ‘Optimist Festival of Trees’ to bring holiday cheer to Atascadero

SAN LUIS OBISPO COUNTY — After hearing pleas from the public during the San Luis Obispo County Board of Supervisors meeting, District 1 Supervisor John Peschong made a motion to condemn the recent terrorist Hamas attacks on Israel. However, the motion failed by a 3-2 vote, with Supervisors Jimmy Paulding, Dawn Ortiz-Legg, and Bruce Gibson dissenting.
Trustee Board introduced to new school resource officer
ATASCADERO — The Atascadero Unified School District (AUSD) met for their regularly scheduled trustee meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 17, at 7 p.m. At the top of the meeting, the AG Leadership from Atascadero High School (AHS) FFA gave a presentation that told the trustee board what they’d been up to at the California Mid-State Fair. FFA students participated in the fair with mechanic projects, welding, and showing multiple kinds of livestock. At the end of the FFA students’ 10-minute presentation, the Trustee Board congratulated them on all of their accomplishments, including the speakers.

ATASCADERO — The Atascadero Community Band has announced the world premiere performance of “Tent City Rag,” a musical production gifted and dedicated to the band by esteemed “amateur” composer and fellow Atascadero resident H. Jack Dexter. This new composition will take center stage, completing the band’s “Around the World in 80 Notes” concert, scheduled to take place on Sunday, Oct. 29, at the Atascadero Bible Church.
