City kicks off ‘Saturday in the Park’ Summer Concert Series
ATASCADERO — The City of Atascadero ready to kick off the 2024 “Saturdays in the Park” Summer Concert Series. Concerts will be held nearly every Saturday evening throughout the summer. Their first concert was held on Saturday, June 15, at 6:30 p.m. at the Atascadero Lake Park Bandstand with Rock Odyssey.
Joy Playground to be temporarily closed due to new shade structure installation
Parents Helping Parents raising funds for new structures with built-in shade coverings over the swings. ATASCADERO — Parents Helping Parents announced shade will soon be over the swings at Joy Playground, the all-inclusive playground for people of all ages and abilities located in Atascadero’s Colony Park (5599 Traffic Way). The playground will undergo a temporary closure due to installation of two new shade coverings over the swings. The existing swing structure will be replaced with two frames that have integrated shade coverings. This enhancement aims to provide individuals with better protection from the summer heat while using the swings, ensuring a more enjoyable experience for all families.
Virginia S. Fontes 1933-2024
Virginia Sequeira Fontes, a resident of Paso Robles who was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, passed away on June 5th, 2024. Virginia was born in Oakland, CA, to Manuel Sequeira and Lenora Amaral. She was raised in and around Oakland with her sister Dolores and later her younger sister LeAnne. She graduated from Castlemont High School and took a job with Hartford Insurance Company.

History of the Atascadero Lake
Where Memories of Water Skiing Under July Skies Still Shine Bright. Long before it was known as “Atascadero Lake,” the small, shallow basin that would eventually transform into the lake naturally filled with winter rains and then receded during the summer heat. In reality, Atascadero “Lake” is more accurately described as a pond, a low-lying area sustained by rainfall and run-off. Spanning approximately 30.5 acres and capable of holding over 68 million gallons of water when full, Atascadero Lake has been a prominent feature of the city since its founding by E.G. Lewis on June 6, 1913. Lewis fondly referred to this small lake, filled by rain runoff, as the”Jewel of Atascadero.”
Andrea Bowengardner, former owner of Timeless Treasures, sentenced for embezzlement
SAN LUIS OBISPO COUNTY — District Attorney Dan Dow announced that Burbank resident Andrea Ruth Bowengardner, 53, has been sentenced to felony probation and 1,040 hours of community work service following her pleas of no contest on March 27, to three felony counts of embezzlement, and one felony count of passing a check with insufficient funds.
Final days to purchase tickets to the Atascadero Wine Fest
ATASCADERO — The Atascadero Lakeside Wine Fest is just around the corner and attendees are encouraged to secure tickets for the highly anticipated event. Tickets are $75 and can be purchased online at atascaderowinefest.com or by calling the Atascadero Chamber at (805) 466-2044. A large portion of the proceeds will benefit the Charles Paddock Zoo. The festival will be held Saturday, June 22, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the picturesque Atascadero Lake Park.
Two arrested by APD for strong-arm robbery
ATASCADERO — On Wednesday, June 12 at almost 6:30 p.m., the Atascadero Police Department (APD) received a report of a strong-armed robbery that had just occurred at the Walgreens Pharmacy, located in the 8000 block of El Camino Real. It was reported that one of the suspects assaulted a Walgreens employee and the suspects left in a vehicle.
John R. McBurney 1933-2024
John Robert McBurney was born July 5, 1933, in Hemet, CA, to James Robert and Lena Eiland, and died April 12, 2024, in Santa Maria. They moved to Santa Margarita in 1945 and owned McBurney Motor Court/Diner. John was a USAF postal clerk/driver when he married Rebecca (Beckie) Epperly at the Arroyo Grande Courthouse on May 16, 1953. They had met at an outdoor movie at Santa Margarita School. He enlisted as a senior, entering basic training before graduating from Atascadero High School. They had two sons, William (June 1954) and Robert (March 1957).
