Peter F. Johnston 1941-2024
Peter Furth Johnston, 83, of Paso Robles, CA, passed away peacefully at home on April 19, 2024. Born in Portland, Oregon, on March 16, 1941, Pete spent his formative years in Southern California before forging a path that would impact many here on the Central Coast over the last 45 years.
Paul L. Wyckoff 1952-2024
Paul L. Wyckoff of Seattle, WA, passed away in the quiet morning hours of April 23rd after each of his family members had a chance to say their goodbyes. Paul grew up in Seattle but sampled the US, attending Holderness boarding school in New Hampshire, serving as a medic with the Army in Alabama, going to college at the University of Denver, Co, and finishing his degree in fisheries at Humbolt State, CA where he met his first wife, Susie Wyckoff, and mother of his four daughters. They lived on a ranch in Paso Robles, CA, for 15 years before bringing the family to Seattle in 1993.
Gordon L. Stewart 1937-2024
Gordon Lee Stewart passed away the morning of April 11, 2024, at home surrounded by his loved ones. Gordon was born July 8, 1937, in Monterey Park, CA., to Arthur and Paulene Stewart. After high school, he joined the Air Force and served as an Airplane Mechanic, which he thoroughly enjoyed. After his discharge from the Air Force, he married the love of his life, Barbara Stewart, and opened Springs Wheel Shop in Paso Robles with the assistance of his Father-in-Law, Cyrus Hulbert. In 1972, he moved the shop to Atascadero and renamed it Stewart’s Wheel Shop. In 2009, at the age of 72, he retired and closed the shop to travel and spend more time with his wife.
Jose (Joe) Mendoza 1939-2024
Our beloved father, grandfather, and husband of 60 years, Jose (Joe) Mendoza, passed away Sunday, April 14, 2024, in San Luis Obispo, Calif. Joe was born in East Los Angeles in 1939 and grew up in South Central LA. He graduated from Fremont High School in 1956, before attending the Los Angeles Trade School for Architectural Drafting. He later joined the Air Force and exhibited his leadership skills in several positions, proudly serving his country while stationed in Guam and eventually Vandenberg Air Force Base in Lompoc, Ca. with the 1st Strategic Aerospace Division.
Ellis T. Roth 1934-2024
It is with very heavy hearts that we share the passing of Ellis Theoador Roth (June 3, 1934- April 18, 2024). To his family and friends, he was truly “The man, the myth, the legend.” His adventurous spirit, generous heart, and his helpful hands will be sincerely missed.
Evelyn L. Roth 1943-2024
Evelyn Louise Bernasconi-Roth, 89, of Templeton, California, entered into eternal rest on April 24, 2024, after a long life filled with love, happiness, and fulfillment. Evelyn was born on November 3, 1934, to Clem and Eva Bernasconi in Salinas, California. After Evelyn graduated from King City High School in 1953, she went on to study at Highland School of Nursing. Evelyn earned her registered nurse’s degree in 1956 after completing her nursing internship at Highland Hospital Emergency Room in Oakland, CA. Evelyn had a long history of service as a registered nurse until she retired from the California Youth Authority in Paso Robles in 1997.

Nipomo man sentenced for second-degree murder and DUI
SAN LUIS OBISPO COUNTY — Nipomo resident Patrick Wayne McDuffee Jr., 34, has been sentenced to nine years plus 15 years to life in state prison for his guilty plea to the second-degree murder of 72-year-old Glenn Howard Owens and to driving under the influence of drugs causing injury.
Atascadero Police investigating fatal incident on Del Rio Overpass
ATASCADERO — At approximately 11:37 a.m., the Atascadero Police Department (APD) and the California Highway Patrol (CHP) were alerted to a distressing event on the Del Rio overpass, involving reports of a female individual jumping onto northbound HWY 101. Officers from the Atascadero Police Department, California Highway Patrol, as well as deputies from the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Department and personnel from the City of Atascadero Fire Department, responded to the scene.

ATASCADERO — On Saturday, April 27, from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., the community came together at Hunter Ranch Golf Course in Paso Robles for the 13th Annual Atascadero Police Charity Golf Tournament and Silent Auction. The tournament was put on by the newly formed Atascadero Police Foundation (APF).

Richard C. Mullikin 1946-2024
Richard Cecil Mullikin, 77, of Atascadero, California, passed away peacefully on March 28, 2024. Richard was born in Franklin, Indiana, on September 22, 1946, and raised in Cambria, California. He enjoyed playing football and baseball at Coast Union High School, where he graduated in 1964. Richard had a successful career as a Journeyman Pipefitter and then as a Construction Supervisor with the State of California, where he retired.
Larry Matthews 1945-2024
Larry Matthews was born on June 30, 1945, in Carnegie, Oklahoma, to parents Raymond and Alverna. He is survived by his wife, Cathy Matthews; children, Larry A. Matthews, Sheri Kimmel, and Christopher Matthews; and three grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Eyvonne Hart, and his brother, Richard Mathews. His brother, Donald Matthews, pre-deceased him. Larry passed away on March 14, 2024, a few days after a lung cancer diagnosis.

Citywide Yard Sale hits Atascadero for seventh year
ATASCADERO — People were out on the streets hunting for pre-owned treasures on Saturday, April 20, for the 7th Annual Atascadero Citywide Yard Sale. The bargains were flowing from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., with over 120 Atascadero residents and neighborhoods participating. The weather also cooperated, and with the sun out, cars were parked all over the windy streets, and most yard sales had a steady stream of shoppers coming and going for the whole six hours.
