'I just want justice' | Sentencing hearing set Wednesday for accused killer in the death of Atascosa County man
ATASCOSA COUNTY, Texas — A man accused of killing a father in Atascosa County in August is set to be sentenced Wednesday, according to the victim’s family. 26-year-old Joseph Saiz has a hearing set for 2 p.m. at the Atascosa County Justice Center. He is one of two suspects charged for murdering 22-year-old Ricky Bernal Jr. 19-year-old Cason Cash Raymond is also charged with murder.
Nixon, Everett take top two spots at TJHRA Finals
A pair of Atascosa County Cowgirls are making a splash in the rodeo arena. Last month, Kennzie Nixon and Khiley Everett took the top two spots in the pole bending competition at the TJHRA Finals at JB Wells Arena in Gonzales. It’s just the start of what appears to be a bright future for the young wranglers who claimed their spot in the National Junior High Rodeo Finals set to take place June 23-29 in Des Moines, Iowa.
Strays to lifesavers
Atascosa Animal Allies has helped almost 6,000 pets since it was formed in October of 2017. We are addressing the overpopulation of stray and unwanted pets in our county through adoptions, transferring animals out of the county, working with Pleasanton Animal Control and Atascosa County Animal Control and by holding reduced cost or free spay/neuter and vaccine clinics.
CORNWELL ZELEDON AWARDED SCHOLARSHIP
Kathryn Cornwell Zeledon received a $1,000 scholarship from Atascosa- McMullen Retired School Personnel to attend Texas A&M University in San Antonio. She is pictured with Paulette Williams of the AMRSP. Kathryn is majoring in Bilingual Education and minoring in business. She hopes to return to Atascosa County to teach. As a 2024 graduate of Pleasanton High School, she was in the Top 10% of her class, a member of the National Honor Society and a Principal’s Honor graduate. Congratulations on your many achievements.
