    5 things to do this weekend: Queens United, Family Fun Day, Honey Bee Festival and more

    Though there's never a shortage of festivals, markets and other cultural happenings in the Classic City, we've chosen to spotlight these events for the weekend of May 24-26.

    Each week, the Banner-Herald will publish a list of five options for things to do in the Athens area. Please note that the events in this list are subject to rescheduling, cancelation or tickets selling out.

    Queens United

    • WHERE: work.shop (160 Winston Dr.)
    • DETAILS: It's a rare occasion to witness so many of Athens' greatest women hip hop artists combine forces for a concert like this. The lineup is a who's who of the scene that includes LB, Molly'Tu Hott, Charlie Beat, Mack2Tone, Koz Geisha, Slim Nii, Jaycee, Lil Soldier, Just the Empress and more with vibes by DJ Izzy.

    Family Fun Day

    • WHERE: Heard Park (400 McKinley Dr.)
    • WHEN: Saturday, May 25 from noon to 7 p.m. (Free admission)
    • DETAILS: Be there for this all-day family event that is set to include the First Annual Slip N' Slide kickball game for kids and adults, a bounce house, free food and drinks, basketball, and free haircuts courtesy of Mack Da Barber. All proceeds from Family Fun Day will be donated to the Loran Smith Center for Cancer Support.

    Athens Area Honey Bee Festival

    • WHERE: UGA Extension Athens-Clarke County (275 Cleveland Rd. in Bogart)
    • WHEN: Saturday, May 25 from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. ($5 admission; free for kids under 5 years of age)
    • DETAILS: The Eastern Piedmont Beekeepers Association is scheduled to host this early morning event that will include educational activities, live music, vendors, arts and crafts, games, face painting, honey tasting, beehive explorations, and plants for sale. This family event is open to the public, and no registration is required.

    Athens Showgirl Cabaret

    • WHERE: Hendershot's (237 Prince Ave.)
    • WHEN: Friday, May 24 from 9 p.m. to midnight ($5 admission; ages 18 and up)
    • DETAILS: Missing the Boybutante Ball already? Athens Showgirl Cabaret is the city's longest-running showcase of drag entertainers, and the artists scheduled for this event include Kellie Divine, Jenn Sparx, Alice D, Adriana Luce, Freya Diva, Aqua Maureen and more, with a guest performance by Dance FX's Bombshells of Burlesque.

    Athens Farmers Market Adoption Event

    • WHERE: Bishop Park (705 Sunset Dr.)
    • WHEN: Saturday, May 25 from 8 a.m. to noon (Free admission)
    • DETAILS: Looking for a furry new friend? The Athens Farmers Market holds pet adoptions on the fourth Saturday of every month for animals from the Madison Oglethorpe Animal Shelter. Even if you're not able to adopt a puppy or a kitten, you're welcome to come visit them and contribute pet supplies to the donation bin.
