More than two years after announcing plans for three Athens area Whataburger locations, the Texas-based fast food chain is ready to open its second restaurant in town. Located at 3321 Lexington Rd. on Athens' eastside, Whataburger plans to begin business at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, May 28.

As with the 3201 Atlanta Hwy. location back in November, the Lexington Road Whataburger will be drive-thru service only for the first six weeks, and will have two lanes with digital menu screens. The eventual opening of the indoor dining area will coincide with online and mobile ordering, curbside pickup and delivery options.

The Whataburger location at 100 Pottery Rd. in Commerce was part of the chain's initial announcement for the Athens area, but a third location in the Athens city limits was announced before any of the first three restaurants had opened. Planned for the Kroger Marketplace development at 700 US-29, the third Athens Whataburger will not be a standalone structure, and an opening date has yet to be announced.

Founded in Corpus Cristi, Texas in 1950, Whataburger currently operates more than 900 locations across the United States, and expects to have 50 restaurants open in Georgia by 2028.
