Signs outside Southern Brewing show ominous future for one of Athens' favorite breweries

Southern Brewing in Athens sat empty on Thursday with a sign on the exterior that read "We thank you for your loyalty throughout the years. We hope to be back in business in the future."

The note added to the uncertainty for the Athens Brewery that has been vague in recent weeks about its future.

On Friday, the company's Instagram noted that all future events were canceled, with a message that read "All future events at Southern Brewing Company have been canceled. We’re truly grateful for your ongoing support and the memories we’ve made together over the years."

The closing comes after the company's Instagram posted that it was closed last Thursday through Sunday "due to unforeseen circumstances...we apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and appreciate your understanding as we work through this situation."

Southern Brewing has not return emails seeking clarity on the company's situation, and whether the closing is temporary or permanent.

In a since-deleted Instagram post on July 26, Southern Brewing said that it was temporarily halting production as it 'worked things out.' It also said it had let go of some of its staff in the process.

"We appreciate the community's support over the past 10 years and we are hopeful that this will be sorted soon," the post read.

The Brewsic Music Festival planned for this weekend has shifted to Terrapin.

Southern Brewing's taproom in Monroe has also shut down.

Southern Brewing opened in 2015 at 231 Collins Industrial Blvd and serves such beers as the Hobnail Boot IPA, Fog Machine Hazy IPA, 7 A.M. lager and Red and Black Sour Ale.
