An Athens woman was indicted recently in connection with a death that Athens-Clarke police said occurred while the woman was recklessly handling a pistol.

The shooting occurred during an argument on June 12 at the woman’s home on Nowhere Road.

The grand jury on Aug. 27 indicted Heather Nicole McCall, 26, on charges of involuntary manslaughter and reckless conduct.

The charges allege the shooting occurred while McCall was recklessly handling the pistol, which fired and killed Jeremy Tyrone Howard, 31, of Marlborough Downs Road, Athens. The two knew each other, police said.

“Ms. McCall advised she had never used a gun before and didn’t realize her finger was on the trigger and when she was screaming, she tensed up her body and the gun went off,” police initially reported.

Howard was able to give the officer his name and age before he was transported to a hospital where he died, police said.

McCall has remained in jail without bond since her arrest on the charges. She is scheduled for an arraignment later this month.
