The Clarke County Health Department reported Friday that a kitten found this week in Athens had rabies, a disease that without proper treatment is fatal.

The stray kitten was located on the 100 block of Snapfinger Drive. The neighborhood is located off Barnett Shoals Road near Old Lexington Road.

The kitten was sent to a laboratory on Tuesday, where it was later confirmed to be rabid.

Residents in the area are advised by the health department to take precautions such as avoiding any wild animals exhibiting unusual behavior such as aggression and lack of fear of people. Report any bites to the health department and make sure pets are current on rabies vaccinations.
