A Madison County man returning home after working as a Door Dash delivery person in Athens escaped injury recently after his car was shot during a road rage incident that erupted in Colbert.

The Madison County Sheriff’s Office reported deputies arrested the alleged shooter, a 22-year-old Colbert man, shortly after the shooting.

The victim, a resident of Comer, told a deputy he was traveling west on Georgia Highway 72 about 9 p.m. on Sept. 18 toward his home when he was tailgated by a Nissan car shinning its bright lights. The man said he was able to slow and get behind the car, but the driver came to an almost complete stop in front of him, so he drove back around the car.

As they continued, the man said the Nissan drove up alongside him and he saw the driver’s window down and a gun in the man’s hand, according to the report.

The man told the deputy he “freaked out” upon seeing the gun, but he heard the gunshot and the sound of his car being hit. He called 911 and pulled into a convenience store parking lot to await the deputy.

A responding deputy spotted the Toyota Matrix leaving Colbert and conducted a traffic stop near the Highway 172 intersection, according to the report.

The deputy asked the driver about the shooting, but the man responded he didn’t want to talk. The officer recovered a Smith & Wesson 5.7 mm handgun in a pocket of the door, according to the report.

A 19-year-old Watkinsville woman in the car with the suspect told deputies the other man pointed a gun at them first, but when deputies search the other man and his vehicle, they didn’t find a firearm, according to the report. The man also denied having a gun.

The suspect was jailed on numerous charges including aggravated assault and drive-by shooting.
