Local government calendar: A-CC Commission meets, BOE early voting ends

Athens-Clarke County Commissioners will gather in City Hall for a special called meeting set for 9:30 this morning. Items on the agenda include the redevelopment of the Georgia Square Mall property on Atlanta Highway and a memorandum of understanding with Piedmont Athens Regional Medical Center. There’s also anticipated action on a Clarke County School District tax ordinance.

Athens Area Chamber of Commerce president David Bradley is making plans to use almost $2 million in federal funding approved by Athens-Clarke County Commissioners earlier this month, $1.9 million from the American Rescue Plant to help with workforce development in Athens. Bradley says Athens’ labor participation rate is well below the national average.

Today is the last day for early voting in a Clarke County School Board runoff: voters in District 2 are choosing between incumbent Claudia Butts and challenger Mary Bagby in an election that will be decided next Tuesday. Butts and Bagby were the top vote getters in a three-candidate race on May 21.
