Look inside: UGA president's historic home listed for $5.12 million

The distinguished Athens residence of the president of the University of Georgia has hit the market for $5.12 million.

Why it matters: 570 Prince Avenue, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is being offered for sale for the first time.

Catch up quick: Built in 1857, this colonial-style landmark has been the official residence for UGA presidents since 1949 when it was purchased by the University System of Georgia with funds donated to UGA for that purpose.

• Seven presidents have lived there over the past 70-plus years.
• Athens-Clarke County tax assessor records show the property is worth over $5.5 million.
• The AJC reports that UGA President Jere Morehead purchased another house in Athens to serve as his residence.

State of play: UGA said in a news release last July that the property has become increasingly costly and challenging to maintain.

• UGA has spent hundreds of thousands of dollars in recent years to maintain and support the facility as its use for large-scale events has become more limited.
• The proceeds from the sale will support "student success initiatives," according to the school.
• UGA wants to invest the funds previously used to maintain the residence into ongoing efforts to enhance campus safety.

The vibe: The 10,852-square-foot estate has been "meticulously" maintained and updated while keeping its "timeless historic charm," according to Ansley Real Estate and Christie's International Real Estate.

• The property features gardens and an expansive wraparound porch on five acres.
• It has five bedrooms, six and a half bathrooms, a two-car garage, a fireplace, and high ceilings.
