    5 things to do this weekend: Ice Cream Day, Abnormal Bazaar, Stuffed Animal Clinic and more

    Though there's never a shortage of festivals, markets and other cultural happenings in the Classic City, we've chosen to spotlight these events for the weekend of July 19-21.

    Each week, the Banner-Herald will publish a list of five options for things to do in the Athens area. Please note that the events in this list are subject to rescheduling, cancelation or tickets selling out.

    National Ice Cream Day

    • WHERE: Bruster's Ice Cream (1029 Athens W. Pkwy.) and Insomnia Cookies (228 E. Clayton St.)
    • WHEN: Sunday, July 21 from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. (Bruster's) and from noon to 1 a.m. (Insomnia)
    • DETAILS: In observance of National Ice Cream Day, treat shops around the United States are offering special deals for their customers. Here in Athens, Bruster's is holding a free ice cream contest and double rewards points, and Insomnia is offering a free scoop of ice cream with every regular price purchase.

    Abnormal Bazaar

    • WHERE: Indie South (470 Hawthorne Ave.)
    • WHEN: Saturday, July 20 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. (Free admission)
    • DETAILS: Indie South's pop-up flea market occurs on the third Saturday of every month at their brick-and-mortar location and features a variety of unique local vendors. Whether shopping for that perfect gift or just browsing, the market offers everything from soaps, jewelry and vintage items to vinyl records and more.

    Stuffed Animal Clinic

    • WHERE: Athens-Clarke County Library (2025 Baxter St.)
    • WHEN: Friday, July 19 from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. (Free admission)
    • DETAILS: Got a special stuffy that is in need of repair? Bring your extra-loved plush pals to the ACC Library and let the on-site expert "doctors" get them stitched up and ready to go. This all-ages event is free and open to the public, and there is no charge associated with having your stuffed animal repaired.

    Family Day: Portrait Day

    • WHERE: Georgia Museum of Art (250 River Rd.)
    • WHEN: Saturday, July 20 from 10 a.m. to noon (Free admission)
    • DETAILS: Looking for inspiration for what to draw or paint? This all-ages program offers interactive museum gallery activities and will provide materials and instruction for guests to create their own take-home portraits. Advance registration is available, but not required. Visit georgiamuseum.org/visit for more information.

    Dead Beat Club karaoke

    • WHERE: The Foundry (295 E. Dougherty St.)
    • WHEN: Friday, July 19 at 6 p.m. ($12 admission)
    • DETAILS: Sure, you've done karaoke, but have you ever had the opportunity to sign up and sing backed by a live band? That's what Dead Beat Club is offering to guests at this one-of-a-kind concert. There are 100 songs to choose from, so plan on getting there early to claim your tune.
