With the summer heat blazing, Athens residents are definitely feeling the burn.

The National Weather Service has issued multiple heat advisories over the last few weeks. This weekend's forecast predicts temperatures nearing 90 degrees each day.

This calls for the perfect opportunity to cool off with a sweet frozen dessert.

Looking for a reason to treat yourself? Sunday, July 21 is National Ice Cream Day. There are many local spots to enjoy chilly desserts. Here's a look at five top-rated places in the Athens area, according to Yelp:

    Alumni Cookie Dough

    480 N. Thomas St., Athens

Athens’ first Cookie Dough Café is committed to satisfy sweet cravings with edible cookie dough, ice cream and shakes. It is open Tuesday through Thursday and Sunday from 1-9 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 1-10 p.m., and it is closed on Monday.

Here's what one Yelp reviewer said: "This is a cute little shop in the downtown Athens area. Cute décor for true Dawg fans. All cookie dough is edible and made without eggs and flour. We had a scoop ice cream and a scoop chocolate chips cookie in and the combination was excellent."

    Jeni's Splended Ice Cream

    1710 Lumpkin St., Athens

Founded by Jeni Britton, Jeni's Splended Ice Cream builds ice cream completely from scratch inspired by art, history, pop culture, and more. This ice cream gig is open every day from noon to 11 p.m.

Here's what one Yelp reviewer said: "When I heard a Jeni's opened up in Athens, I had to stop by since it's one of my favorite places! It's in a little building (looks like a house), and once you walk in it's like any other Jeni's you've been to. They have most of the same flavors other stores have, but I would double check to see exactly what flavors they have."

    Ben & Jerry's

    105 College Ave., Athens

Ben & Jerry's ice cream shop offers a variety of flavors served in freshly baked waffle cones, shakes and sundaes. It is open 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 11 a.m. to midnight on Friday and Saturday.

Here's what one Yelp reviewer said: "Who doesn't love Ben & Jerry's? I loved the whole experience, and as a huge fan of ice cream, loved this whole place!"

    Bruster's Real Ice Cream

    1029 Parkway Pl., Athens

This shop has shakes, freezes, cones and of course, ice cream. With more than 24 ever-changing flavors in their shops daily, Bruster's is open 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. everyday.

Here's what one Yelp reviewer said: "First time here and so glad we came. Their Key Lime Pie ice cream is to die for and their cotton candy explosion is similar to Friendly's. Decent prices but overall great quality for what you pay for. Highly recommend."

    Andy's Frozen Custard

    2180 W. Broad St., Athens

Andy's Frozen Custard, established in 1986, has been dedicated to serving high-quality frozen custard, originating from Osage Beach, Missouri, and expanding to numerous locations across the country. This place is open Sunday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. and on Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to midnight.

Here's what one Yelp reviewer said: "I was surprised at how smooth this is. It tastes the same as any ice cream but smoother. ... They're service was good, but my friend had gotten the wrong thing; however, they were nice about it and gave them the right one. If you go late at night, it gives you those summer vibes."
