Former Georgia baseball slugger Charlie Condon made MLB history Friday as he signed his rookie contract with the Colorado Rockies.

Less than a week after being taken with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2024 MLB Draft by the Rockies, the 2024 Golden Spikes Award winner signed the largest MLB draft signing bonus in MLB history at $9.25 million according to ESPN's Jeff Passan . MLB Pipeline's Jim Callis was the first to report it.

Condon's signing bonus tied him with Wake Forest pitcher Chase Burns, who signed his signing bonus with the Cincinnati Reds on Thursday. By being taken No. 3 overall by the Rockies, Condon surpassed Jeff Pyburn for the highest drafted played in Georgia baseball history.

“It's been crazy, and I’m thankful for that,” Condon said after being picked by the Rockies on MLB Network at the MLB draft last Sunday. “It’s been a lot of work for myself, and also a lot of hard work and the people that I've been surrounded with. That's a thing I've learned along the way. One, being able to trust in your own process and be comfortable in your own skin; two, is the importance of finding good people and finding your people to surround yourself with.”

Rockies assistant general manager of scouting Danny Montgomery told reporters in Denver on Sunday that the organization sees Condon as a player that they can build around for their future.

"He’s the kind of guy who has the chance to change the face of the organization,” Montgomery said according to The Denver Post. "(With his) power and the ability to do things defensively, and a little bit of versatility, we were all extremely happy. "We would have been happy with any of the other four guys we had (targeted), but this guy is really special."

Condon put up video game like numbers this past season for Georgia as he led the nation in both batting average (.433) and home runs (37) — just the third player in NCAA history to lead the nation in both categories in the same season. He was also crowned the recipient of the 2024 Golden Spikes Award, which is handed out to the nation's top college baseball player.
