Rusty’s Ramblings: Behind the scenes buzz from day one of Georgia fall camp

Day one of Georgia fall camp is in the books. My guy Jake Rowe had a great piece on what he saw during the media practice viewing session while Palmer Thombs provided plenty of pictures . Hopefully it’s not the last they get to see of the action in Athens.

*** I reached out to a few folks for notes on the day, and gathered a couple of things about the quarterbacks… Just because you did not hear much about Gunner Stockton doesn’t mean you should write him off for the future. “Consistent every day” is what I was told when I asked about him and where he is right now going into another fall camp. That’s important at the quarterback position because we know how Kirby Smart values decision making and knowing what he’s going to get out of those guys.

*** I was also told that outside of Carson Beck, Ryan Puglisi was the quarterback that had the ‘wow’ throws on Thursday. You remember what Matt Godwin said about the true freshman in multiple interviews on The Georgia Show and Bark After Dark: Puglisi and Caleb Williams were the two best workouts he saw in person while in the scouting department at Georgia. His arm strength is off the charts. Puglisi is young, and he is still learning the offense, but he is going to be a factor when this job comes open and I stand by that.

*** Another guy I asked about was Bo Hughley because I was curious on how he was holding up in a second season at Georgia. Hughley came in at 298 pounds this week. That is a fantastic weight for him. He got sick right before he arrived on campus coming out of high school and weighed in at 264. He’s listed at 280, but getting him closer to 300 is promising for his future. Chalk him up as another one I think can make a move on a starting spot a year from now with a potential mass exodus on the offensive line.

*** Juan Gaston is set to make his college decision later tonight, and I am not sure that any school truly knows on what he will say tonight around 7pm. He is quiet, and has kept this very close the vest as far as any leaks around this. I talked to a few people close to him this week, and what I will say is every one of those conversation led to Georgia.

I know he has dealt with some heavier weight in the offseason, but I have no concerns about Georgia being able to get that off of him should he choose the Bulldogs. Just look at Nyier Daniels and Daniel Calhoun in this past class. It took them about 4-5 months to shed 50+ pounds. I think Gaston can play in the 335 range given his 6-foot-7.5 frame.
