Alexander & Nelsonville-York combine for 30 runs in Spartans' blowout victory

    2024-04-26

ALBANY - Powered by 10 runs in the first inning alone, Alexander softball was able to cruise to a wild 22-8 barnburner over Nelsonville-York at home in five innings on Wednesday afternoon. Drawing 17 walks in the win, the Spartans (4-9, 3-7 Tri-Valley Conference-Ohio) would record just eight hits in order to snap the four-game skid.

Kaylee Hudnall would lead all batters on the day with a perfect 4-4 day at the plate, driving in three runners while scoring four out of the leadoff spot for Alexander. Micaela Moat and Sarah Harris would both finish with three RBIs, three walks drawn and a hit. Reagan Wandling would also grab a hit while Rylee Bush drew four walks and scored two runs.

In the circle, Bush would toss all five innings, allowing 10 hits and seven earned runs, walking eight while striking out two.

The Buckeyes (0-14, 0-10 TVC-Ohio) would ultimately end up with 10 hits in one of its better offensive outputs of the season. Emmie Fowler would finish with a perfect 4-4 afternoon at the plate, driving in a pair of runners. Brooklyn Gerrity would grab a pair of hits and score three runs out of the three-spot while Ava Nungester, Kyleigh Warren, Kaitlyn Alvis and Gracie Saunders all had a hit. Alvis and Anastasia McLaughlin would both finish with a pair of RBIs as well.

The first seven batters would reach base for Alexander in the bottom of the first, only one reaching by way of a hit as the Spartans suddenly jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the blink of an eye. After the first out of the inning, Alexander would go on to score another six runs in the frame, again just one coming by way of a hit as the Spartans held a double-digit lead after one inning of play.

An RBI single from Alvis would highlight a three-run second frame that would at least give the Buckeyes a small glimmer of potential hope. That hope would quickly grow in the following frame. After three straight singles loaded the bases up to start the third, Nelsonville-York would be able to scratch out two more runs, making it a 10-5 game.

Just as quickly hope arrived, it faded for Nelsonville-York. Taking advantage of five walks, two hit by pitches and two run-scoring singles, Alexander would score seven runs before ever recording an out, suddenly jumping out to a 17-5 lead at the end of three innings.

The Buckeyes would get one back with an RBI from McLaughlin but an RBI single from Moat in the bottom of the fourth would highlight a six-run frame for the Spartans, opening up a 16-run lead.

Nelsonville-York would get a pair back on a two-run double from Fowler but the damage was already done as Alexander eventually sent them down, securing the mercy rule victory.
