NELSONVILLE — Nelsonville-York High School held Commencement for the Class of 2024 on Thursday in the school gymnasium.

Graduation speeches inspired optimism and thanked the Buckeyes community for its support. A video of the seniors marching to their seats to the tune of Pomp and Circumstance appears on the Athens Messenger’s Facebook page .

“Remember the late nights, the friendships forged and the lessons learned,” Principal Elise Stephan said during her keynote address to the large gathered to celebrate the occasion. “High school is more than just academics. It is a time of self discovery where you have explored your passion, developed your talents and prepared for the future.”

Stephan continued, “As you go out into the world, take with you the knowledge that you are capable of achieving greatness. Embrace the opportunities that come your way and never be afraid to take risks.”

To parents and families, Stephan said, “Your unwavering support and sacrifices have been instrumental in your children’s success. We thank you for your dedication.”

As to the future, Stephan told the seniors as they prepared to embark on the next chapter of their lives, “Remember that the world needs talent, more ideas and your leadership. You are the next generation of thinkers, innovators and change makers. Whether you go to college, enter into the work force or pursue other paths, know that you have the tools to make a difference.”

Stephan concluded her speech with a quote from Dr. Seuss. “You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose.”

Stephan then said, “The journey ahead will be filled with challenges and opportunities, but I have no doubt that you will rise to the occasion. Congratulations Class of 2024 — we are immensely proud of you.”

During her speech, Senior Class President Bianca Gerity thanked teachers, friends and family.

“All these people have affected my life in amazing ways,” Gerity said as she expressed her gratitude. “We all have people in our lives like this. Whether you are family or friends, they have helped us to grow.”

Senior Tatum L’Heureux spoke about the importance of trust and people who support her.

“These people have created in me the idea that I can do or be anything I want to be,” L’Heureux said about being inspired by the belief that she and her classmates can do anything because of the values instilled in them by friends, teachers and the community.

The Buckeyes’ diplomas were presented by Principal Stephan, Class Secretary Lyndsey Spencer and Class Treasurer Kaylee Wright.
