EMA alerts citizens of up mock disaster training

    By Athens County EMA,

    2024-08-15

The Athens County Emergency Management Agency and the Local Emergency Planning Committee will sponsor a large-scale training exercise at the Gordon K. Bush Ohio University Airport from 9 a.m. to noon Sunday.

Several local fire departments, emergency medical services, and other first responders will participate in the exercise, which will be a simulation of an airplane crash, complete with a live fire, approximately 30 victims, and a hazardous materials spill. This hands-on exercise aims to enhance the preparedness and coordination of all participating agencies in the event of a real-life emergency.

A tabletop exercise will be held Saturday at the Albany Fire Department to prepare for the live-fire training on Sunday.

The Athens County EMA encourages the public to be aware of increased emergency vehicle activity in the area surrounding the Ohio University Airport on Sunday, as well as potential smoke and fire from the simulated exercise. There is no cause for alarm; all activities are part of the planned training.
