Columnist Clare Ansberry wrote “Gardens and flowers have a way of bringing people together, drawing them from their homes.” That is precisely what the Athens County Humane Society has in mind with its 30th annual Garden Tour scheduled for 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 9.

The self-directed tour will offer a medley of gardens, some small and intimate, some big and bold, annuals, perennials, vegetables, and pollinator gardens with native plants, all located in Athens or within a short drive.

Visitors to the gardens, whether new to the tour or loyal fans, can expect to be impressed by the dedication, inspiration, hard work, and generous spirits of the gardeners who have made this year’s tour npossible. Most of the gardeners will be on hand, to answer questions and share their stories. All, like the actress, Audrey Hepburn, believe “To plant a garden is to believe in tomorrow.”

Local merchants and artisans have generously contributed to four separate raffle packages (“Treat Yourself,” “Bird Lovers,” “Gardening,” and “Athens Art Guild”). Tickets for the tour ($20) and the raffles ($10) can be purchased online at athenshumane.org/events or at the Athens County Visitors Bureau on East State Street from 11am to 3 p.m. the day of the tour.

All proceeds support the work of the Athens County Humane Society (ACHS) to improve the well-being of pets and other animals in the community. ACHS provides low-cost spay/neuter services, employs the county Humane Agent, and strives to ensure the best possible treatment, care, and placement of animals in need. ACHS is a charitable nonprofit located in Athens and receives no tax dollars. ACHS is funded by donations from the community, fundraisers, corporate partnerships and grant funds.

For information about the Garden Tour and to learn about other ACHS events, services, and how you can get involved, visit athenshumane.org or phone (740) 592-6047.
