    4th of July events near you

    Each year citizens gather together with friends and family to celebrate the 4th of July at various events and outings. This year will be no different with a wide swath of entertainment available in the area from July 3rd all the way to July 6th. Take a look at the list below to determine where you and your group want to celebrate.

    Wednesday

    Car Show: Beginning at 5 p.m. in Athens, there will be a car show for citizens to enjoy, located at the Market on State.Athens Fireworks: The fireworks begin at 10 p.m. and will take place at the end of East State Street, according to the city’s website.Buckeye Lake Area Star Spangled Tradition (BLASST): At this event fireworks will be set off over the lake, located at 2905 Leibs Island Road Northeast, Millersport, OH, and will begin at 9:45 p.m.

    Thursday

    Kroger Customer Appreciation Picnic: From 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., the Kroger in Nelsonville will host a picnic to celebrate its loyal customers at 965 Poplar Street, Nelsonville, OHIndependence Day Potluck: Organized by Rural Action, there will be a potluck in celebration of the 4th of July at the Chesterhill Produce Auction, located at 8380 Wagoner Road, Chesterhill at 3 p.m.Free Pool Admission: From 4 p.m. until close, the Athens Community Pool will have free admission.Under the Elms Summer Concert Series: The next installment of Ohio University’s Summer Concert Series will feature Rod Miller, a John Philip Sousa impersonator. The event will begin at 7:00p.m. on OU’s College Green.Thunder in the Valley: An annual event for Hocking College, Thunder in the Valley is a fireworks show in celebration of Independence Day. The event will begin at dusk and will be located at the Hocking College campus. For parking and VIP information, visit Hocking College’s Facebook page.Shuttle to Thunder in the Valley: For those who are unable or do not wish to park on the Hocking College campus, the Hocking Valley Scenic Railway will be operating a shuttle to the Thunder in the Valley event from their depot, located at 33 W. Canal Street, Nelsonville, OH. The shuttle will leave at 9:00p.m. and cost $5 per person.

    July 6

    Veterans Fundraiser: Hosted by the Friends and Neighbors Food Pantry, the fundraiser will feature door prizes, food, a yard sale and a bake sale. The event will take place at 24576 Parkersburg Road, Coolville from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. All proceeds will go to the Athens County Stand Down and the VA Hospital in Chillicothe.
