According to a release, volunteers from the International Union of Elevator Constructors (IUEC) Local 21 were out working, despite a 105 degree heat index, to repair a broken down fishing pier at the fishery center.

“Adults and kids alike use the piers for fishing,” Tom Lang, Inland Fisheries Division outreach director, said. “From newborns to elderly in wheelchairs. People from all across the country come here. We get school groups and senior citizens’ homes.”
This project was a part of a series of volunteer projects by the IUEC Local 21 through the Union Sportsmen’s Alliance’s Work Boots on the Ground program. According to the Union Sportsmen’s Alliance, the IUEC Local 21 volunteers had previously been out in April when they demolished old piers in order to be replaced.
“My union brothers all know how to work,” JP Karnes, IUEC Local 21 volunteer project leader, said. “After the plan goes out, we hardly even look at each other because you’re just working.”
According to Lang, the 27-year-old piers had been used by more than 750,000 guests in their time, and were showing signs that they needed to replaced. Lang said with the help of the Union Sportsmen’s Alliance and the IUEC Local 21, guests will be able to continue fishing at the piers for even longer.
