ATHENS, WV (LOOTPRESS) – Concord University nursing students have been afforded the opportunity to participate in summer externships with WVU Medicine -Princeton Community Hospital.

This exciting chance at valuable experience emerged through the clinical partnerships of Concord’s nursing department and networking through the education department at the hospital.

Nursing students with Concord applied for the externships at the end of the Spring semester, taking on new challenges during the summer months when their respective schedules are devoid of educational obligations.

“I feel what I have learned this summer will only continue to help me during the last year of nursing school,” said Santana B. Stickland, a Concord nursing student. “I am currently externing in the women’s center unit and absolutely love it! I have learned to set up the rooms for different types of deliveries, the process of getting a patient ready for the epidural, how to give a newborn a hearing screen, and much more.”

Department Chair and Director of Nursing with Concord University, Michael Holt, commented on the value in such opportunities for students and the insight they stand to gain.

“Externships are a great way to gain valuable experience while exploring various opportunities available in nursing. Students themselves need to be motivated enough to pursue them and our nursing students at Concord University are motivated!,” he said. “With the assistance of our clinical partners, Concord University Nursing provided information about externships, and our students eagerly seized the available opportunities.”

Another student spoke of their experience since taking on the externship, writing, “My overall experience is worthwhile and I’m thoroughly enjoying my time – so much that I’m ready to graduate and be a nurse. I’m really grateful for the experience.”
