Outside of one year as a Georgia running backs coach in 2005, Kirby Smart worked under the legendary coach Nick Saban in various roles from 2004 to 2015. Ultimately, Smart became Saban's defensive coordinator at Alabama from 2008 to 2015.

Smart helped Saban win four national championships at Alabama before taking the head coaching job at Georgia in 2016. Since then, Smart has won two more national championships while building the Bulldogs using a similar model to how Saban built his Alabama teams. This model relies on defense and controlling the line of scrimmage while also recruiting at an elite level.

On Tuesday at SEC media day, Smart appeared on SEC Network with his former boss, who has retired and is working as an analyst. Smart recounted a funny incident when the coaches tried to skip work to go golfing, but their boss unexpectedly showed up.

"I had to find out where he was playing so I knew where I could play," Smart said. "He doesn't remember the story when I started the staff scramble and we were scrambling as a staff. We paired everybody up, offense, defense, analysts and there was one day that he was supposed to play at another course and we all went out there, about 25 guys. He pulls into the one that we were in. I've never seen coaches scramble and scour; they were all running for the ditches."

Smart said he didn't know what everyone was running from until he saw that Saban was there. Smart mentioned that he had some "bad sources" who told him where Saban was supposed to be playing, but in the end, they were still able to play their round of golf.
