Rumor: Dak Prescott & Belichick Sign In 'Package Deal'?

    By Mike Fisher,

    2024-08-07

OXNARD - Up until recently,  we have gently suggested that projecting Dak Prescott playing in another team's uniform was ... premature.

At the same time, we've been respectful of the guys who presently own their positions as head coaches, in Dallas and elsewhere.

But Dak's own comments - and maybe Bill Belichick's secret network of pals - are changing all of that.

And suddenly, not only do we have rumors that Belichick is in line to get hired by Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones to replace Mike McCarthy in 2025 ...

And not only do we have rumors that Prescott might leave at that same time via free agency ...

But now comes gossip that Prescott and Belichick are a New York-bound "package deal'' for next year.

This we cannot deny: It sort of fits.

FS1's Nick Wright is the guy floating this rumor, and before we go too far with it: Wright doesn't have sources here. He's filling a segment on a talk show.

    Nevertheless ...

    Listen to Dak ...

“I want to be here, but when you look up all the great quarterbacks I watched played for other teams,” Prescott said recently of the idea of becoming a 2025 free agent and changing employers, "that’s not something to fear. It may be a reality for me one day. It may not be my decision. That’s the freedom that I have.”

And from Cowboys owner Jerry Jones in our 1-on-1 camp visit with him?

" Dak, very artfully, has positioned himself to where he makes the call,'' Jones told us. "And at the end of the day, we have to live with it.''

And now the ideas - if not the bidders - line up. Among the most prominent possibilities? The rival New York Giants.

Would the Giants fan base love for Belichick to "come home'' if present coach Brian Daboll fails? You bet.

Would the Giants fan base love to quit losing to Dak (New York is 2-12 against him) by getting him to join them? Makes sense.

The Giants drafted Daniel Jones in the first round of the 2019 NFL Draft, but have seen very little progress through his tenure with only one postseason appearance to show in 2022. Last year was supposed to be the encore to that achievement, but started in complete disaster before Jones tore his ACL and missed the rest of the season.

They did pay him. But his contract has escape hatches; they can move off of him after this year ... and they can then in theory push to sign Prescott.

New York signing him (pricy as it might be, with a CowboysCountry.com source suggesting a $70 million APY cost) would be a double-whammy in the NFC East. And teaming him with Belichick - maybe stealing him from Dallas, too?

    That's a double-double-whammy.

Prescott and the Giants would make football sense. And to New Yorkers, Belichick and the Giants would, too.
