Patrick Mahomes Reveals Chiefs' No. 1 Key

    By Mike Fisher,

Speed on offense? That's not a Kansas City Chiefs problem, as this group of skill-position guys can line up like a track team.

What is the challenge for Patrick Mahomes and the offense, which in this training camp has been very much about the deep ball?

    Balance.

“Obviously with the speed, we’re gonna be able to hit guys over the top,'' Mahomes said. "But I think the biggest thing is you want to be able to do both. I think that’s something we’ve worked on all camp is you’ve got to be able to hit the guys over the top. ...''

    Definitely that. And ....?

"And then when the defenses play deep,'' he added, "you have to be able to hit the medium-type things. And then we have to be able to run the football.''

    And there it is. Balance.

The Chiefs' offense was missing a speed element last season, with only Travis Kelce and Rashee Rice , Patrick Mahomes' two main weapons, working as consistent helpers.

But now, after signing Marquise Brown and drafting Xavier Worthy, both of whom have home-run speed, the Chiefs have added another string to their offensive bow.

With Kelce and Rice operating the underneath routes, Worthy and Brown can stretch the field for big gains, and you can be sure that Mahomes will be dialing up the launch codes often in 2024.

And with training camp now in full swing, Rice, who is now in his second season, gave his thoughts on the receiver room.

“We’re electric,” Rice said . “Just looking forward to putting on a show, ready to go out there and have fun with each other.”

With a room consisting of Kelce, Rice, Brown, Worthy, Kadarius Toney, Justin Watson, Mecole Hardman, Justyn Ross, and Nikko Remigio, there is speed everywhere you look.

And that makes a Chiefs offense that was good enough to win the Super Bowl last season even better, which is a scary thought for the rest of the NFL.

But who is the fastest in the room?

“We got football speed, we got real speed, but we all got speed,” Rice said.
