Rece Davis Reveals Pick For Best Cornerback In College Football Entering 2024

The Michigan Wolverines have one of the better-returning defenses in the country this season. Last season, they allowed 10.4 points, 90 rushing yards, and 157 passing yards per game. Michigan led the Big Ten in points allowed and was second in both rushing and passing yards per game in the conference.

One of the critical pieces of the Michigan defense is cornerback Will Johnson. Johnson was second on the team with four interceptions last season behind Mike Sainristil, who had six. Johnson also returned one of his interceptions for a pick-six in 2023.

Rece Davis praised Johnson on a recent edition of the College GameDay Podcast . Davis called Johnson the "best cornerback" in college football. Johnson is also the top-rated player in EA Sports College Football 25 at 96 overall.

"...I'll start with Michigan. I have them like 14th or 15th, not precise numbers here," Davis said. "Reason to believe, proven playmaking cornerstones. They literally have the best cornerback in college football, Will Johnson, who I believe is the highest-rated player on College Football 25."

The Michigan defense also returns star players like defensive lineman Mason Graham, safety Rod Moore, DL Kenneth Grant, and linebacker Ernest Hausmann.

However, the program will be led by a new head coach this season. Sherrone Moore will enter his first full-time head coach season in 2024. Moore was the Michigan offensive coordinator last season.

Under Moore, Michigan had the third-most rushing yards per game in the Big Ten with 169.1. Blake Corum led the charge with 1,245 rushing yards. Donovan Edwards is the expected running back starter this season.

Michigan faces the Fresno State Bulldogs to open the 2024 season on Aug. 31.
