College Football Coach Officiates His Own Player’s Wedding

The bond between coach and player is always special, and that's the case for Boise State's Braxton Fely and head Broncos coach, Spencer Danielson, who were side by side during Fely's recent wedding.

A rising junior and defensive lineman, Fely has been a force up front for Danielson's defense on the football field. But off the field, Danielson was there for Fely when he called on him for one of the most important days of his life.

Fely and his wife, Kelly, married in May, with none other than Danielson standing in between them officiating the service, according to a post on the Boise State athletics website .

"Not too many people can say they were married by their football coach," said the article. "What was born out of a joke in the locker room became reality as Fely approached Danielson to officiate the ceremony."

    Of course, Danielson was honored.

“I appreciate you asking me, Braxton and yes, I will marry you,” Danielson responded when asked.

Fely even had the approval of his soon-to-be wife, who had come to learn from her fiance and his teammates what a man of honor their head coach is.

"At the time, I lived in a house with six football players and she’s heard them all talk a lot about what a great man he is and how much he cares for us all as individuals, not just as football players," said Fely. "And she trusts me. It didn’t take that much convincing.”

The moment was also very meaningful to Danielson.

“That is the most fulfilling thing for me,” he explained. “I care so much about being able to create a relationship with these young men. So when I hear about our players and how much they care about me, love me, care about this team, their teammates, the rest of our coaches, that is the most affirming thing that anyone can tell me.”

A very neat moment this offseason for Boise State football, and some touching words from Danielson on what it means to be a head coach.
