Tampa Bay Buccaneers rookie Graham Barton , a first-round pick in April’s NFL Draft , is making the challenging transition from left tackle to center—a position he hasn’t played consistently since his freshman year at Duke. The shift has come with its share of difficulties, particularly with snapping during practice sessions, raising some early concerns about his readiness to take on the pivotal role full-time.

Despite these issues, Buccaneers general manager Jason Licht remains optimistic. During a recent appearance on The Ira Kaufman Podcast, Licht addressed Barton’s snapping challenges, but quickly downplayed any potential worries, expressing confidence in the rookie’s ability to adjust and succeed by the time the regular season kicks off.

“He’s had a handful that he’d probably like to have back, but not that many,” Licht said , via JoeBucsFan.com. “Nothing that can’t be fixed. He’s very good at it. . . . By Week One, I promise you he’s going to be in a different place.”

Barton was installed as the team’s starting center shortly after being drafted, a testament to the team’s belief in his versatility and skill set. His experience at left tackle, where he excelled during his college career, played a significant role in his draft stock rising, but the transition to center is a different challenge. It requires not only precise snapping but also quick decision-making and leadership of the offensive line—a role that Barton is still adjusting to.

The Buccaneers' coaching staff and management are aware of the steep learning curve Barton faces, but they are encouraged by his progress and potential. Licht emphasized that the snapping issues seen in practice are part of the normal growing pains expected in such a transition, and he fully expects Barton to iron out these kinks before the team’s Week 1 matchup against the Washington Commanders on September 8.
