Are Fumbles a Concern For Bills in 2024?

Prior to the start of the NFL season, training camp is a great way for teams to find their strengths and weaknesses within the team, both individually and as a group. For the Buffalo Bills, one glaring weakness came up multiple times with their offense: ball security.

Early on in camp, fourth-round running back Ray Davis was one of the team's biggest culprits when it came to fumbles. Despite this, offensive coordinator Joe Brady spoke positively about Davis's maturity regarding the issue.

"Fumbles are a big thing," said Brady. "His demeanor; he's as mature as they come. He understands how important the football is and putting those on the ground obviously impacted him."

Although Davis had his struggles, the team is not expecting him to come in and be their top rushing option. However, their projected top running back, James Cook, has had issues with holding onto the ball as well.

According to reports, Cook had multiple fumbles in the team's final Wednesday practice, and struggled with drops throughout the entire span of training camp. This struggle is not new to Cook, as he had four fumbles and an 11.9% drop rate in the 2023 season.

While it's one thing for the team to acknowledge and address issues like this, it's an entirely different thing to actually fix them, and with Cook now entering his second-straight season with these issues, it has become a real concern for the Bills less than a month away from the regular-season.

Whether or not the team will struggle with this issue throughout the year remains to be seen, but it is certainly something to watch this upcoming season.
