Bills Coach Sean McDermott Gets Honest on Von Miller Situation

After a debilitating ACL injury two years ago, Buffalo Bills linebacker Von Miller is feeling optimistic heading into the 2024 season.

He has told reporters that he's "in a great spot mentally and physically" and has worked his way back close to his optimal shape, though it remains unclear what the 35-year-old's role will be this season.

Bills head coach Sean McDermott said the former Super Bowl MVP still has what it takes to be a key contributor.

"I wouldn't sell Von short," McDermott told the media on August 8. "He's done some things on early downs in camp so far that have flashed. We'll see where it goes and how it trends."

McDermott added that watching Miller with a renewed bounce in training camp has been a welcome sight.

"I think early on it's been different because he's been able to be in training camp," the veteran tactician said. "With that comes his influence, the standard that he approaches every day with, physically, mentally."

There were high hopes among Bills fans when Miller signed a six-year, $120 million deal in 2022, but the extended recovery from the ACL injury derailed him on the stat sheet. In 12 games last season, he registered only three combined tackles and zero sacks.

But in the words of McDermott, Miller is "trending up" entering mid-August.

The Bills will start their preseason slate at home against the Chicago Bears on Saturday, August 10 before facing the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Carolina Panthers.
