San Antonio Spurs Make Coaching Hire From New York Knicks

In a busy offseason, the San Antonio Spurs have made plenty of underrated moves, and are expected to add plenty of talent to their G League affiliate, the Austin Spurs. As players who don't quite make the opening-night roster still look for employment, the G League provides a domestic, high-level basketball experience with a direct route to eventually make the NBA.

The Spurs recently hired Scott King, formerly a player development coach for the New York Knicks, to head their G League squad, as reported by ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski.

King's official title in New York was Assistant Director of Player Development. He started his career in the front office of the Fort Wayne Mad Ants, the G League affiliate of the Indiana Pacers. He worked his way up to video intern with the Detroit Pistons before landing gigs with the Knicks.

He played three years of NCAA basketball at Stony Brook University before playing a final season at Fairfield. He averaged 3.1 points and 1.3 rebounds between 2012-16.

The Austin Spurs have previously employed current head coaches like Quin Snyder and Taylor Jenkins, so the map to move upwards and land a full-time coaching gig is pretty clear. The Austin Spurs went 20-14 in the regular season last year and were coached by Will Voigt, who has taken an assistant position at Brigham Young University.

King will likely coach two-way players like Harrison Ingram, Jamaree Bouyea, and David Duke Jr. Players currently signed to training camp deals, like Brandon Boston Jr., Riley Minix, Nathan Mensah, and Malachi Flynn might also be on his roster.
