Greg McElroy Discusses What Happens if Clemson Upsets CFB Powerhouse in 2024

The Clemson Tigers face a pivotal year on the football field in 2024. Since reaching the College Football Playoff in 2020, the Tigers have been in a steady decline.
Some have questions over whether or not Clemson can compete in modern college football. Greg McElroy discussed how one game could change that narrative surrounding the team.
McElroy believes an upset win over the Georgia Bulldogs in Week 1 would provide proof of Clemson's ability to stay nationally relevant under head coach Dabo Swinney. He shared the following thoughts on the huge showdown.
"It would be massive for Clemson in the court of public opinion. It would be enormous. Because people are gonna, regardless of what happens with Georgia, Week 1, whether they win or lose, people are gonna know that Georgia has one of the best rosters in the sport."
Aside from having a loaded depth chart, the Bulldogs have a track record of maximizing their talent. Georgia has not lost a regular season game since 2020.
McElroy continued to discuss the significance of a potential upset win for Clemson.
"You think back to just how rare a Georgia loss is, they've lost just twice in the last three seasons. Both of those losses came in the SEC championship game. They've won 39 consecutive regular season games dating back to 2020."
Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney talks during the Clemson football Media Outing & Open House at the Allen N. Reeves Football Complex in Clemson, S.C. Tuesday, July 16, 2024.
Clemson has an outside chance of handing Georgia its first regular season loss in over three seasons. McElroy outlined how the Tigers could pull off a surprise win.
"If Clemson beats Georgia, that means that they've probably gotten improved quarterback play, they probably were able to run the football pretty well, they probably were able to create some one-on-one opportunities for their wide receivers ... and Georgia still maybe has a couple issues against the run that plagued them at times last year."
Clemson kicks off its season against Georgia at 12 p.m. ET on Aug. 31.
