The United States defeated Brazil 1-0 on Saturday in the women's soccer gold medal match, winning the Olympic gold for the first time since 2012. Former Stanford defender Naomi Girma was one of the team's heroes.

Girma played every minute en route to Team USA's gold medal win, and her defense was critical to the Americans' allowing just two goals across six games and keeping four clean sheets.

It's been a great run for the former Cardinal as Girma was named the U.S. Soccer Female Player of the Year in 2023. She joined the San Diego Wave in 2022 and was named the NWSL Defender of the Year in both 2022 and 2023.

Girma played for Stanford from 2018 to 2021 and captained the team that won the Women's College Cup in 2019. She was the first pick of the 2022 NWSL Draft and won the NWSL Rookie of the Year award.

Considered one of the best center backs in the world, this is a crowning accomplishment for Girma. Still just 24 years old, the Stanford product is just getting started.
