5 Standouts from Jets Preseason Opening Win

    By Nick Faria,

A preseason win may not mean anything once the regular season begins in under a month, but the New York Jets have to be thrilled with how their 20-17 victory over the Washington Commanders looked.

Not just because they won the game, but also because of how many standouts came out of Saturday's contest.

Let's break down the big standouts here.

    Braelon Allen

The closest thing to watching Braelon Allen run on Saturday was that of a locomotive train. The Wisconsin product was lethal in getting to the second level and made life miserable for Washington. He averaged nine (!!) yards a carry in the win.

    Jarrick Bernard-Converse

Bernard-Converse showed a lot on Saturday after getting beat on the fourth play of the day for 45 yards. The LSU product that was taken in the sixth round last season made multiple pass deflections and didn't give up a catch after getting beat in the first quarter. Even his coverage on the big play was solid. He's part of the future at this position.

    QB3 Room

If Adrian Martinez or Andrew Peasley were on the team last season instead of Tim Boyle are the Jets coming off a playoff berth?

Jokes aside, New York has to be thrilled with how the two undrafted rookies looked on Saturday. Peasley finished 8-11 passing for 73 yards and a touchdown. Martinez led a game-tying and winning score late in the fourth quarter to win the game while making some pretty impressive plays himself.

It was a great day for the Jets quarterback room.

    Olu Fashanu

Fashanu played the entire first half because the Jets know his reps won't exactly be guaranteed once the regular season starts. In that time of action, the former 11th-overall pick looked pretty impressive in both run and pass-blocking situations. This was a good first step against a good front seven in Washington.

    Leonard Taylor III

Speaking of the front seven, Leonard Taylor came away as the best player for New York during their run to victory. The UDFA out of Miami recorded a sack and two tackles for losses in a dominant day overall. He may still be battling for a roster spot, but Saturday was a big step for him.
