Can Daniels Close Gap Between Commanders and Eagles?

    By Mike Fisher,

AUG 11 DANIELS DEBUT What's the fastest way for an NFC East have-not (like the Commanders) to catch the haves (like the Eagles)?

    Washington needs a QB.

It appears Washington has a QB.

Jayden Daniels made a sharpo entrance into the NFL during the Commanders’ 2024 preseason opener against the New York Jets . Despite only being on the field for one drive, the No. 2 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft left a lasting impression, showcasing the instincts and creativity that have the Commanders’ organization and fan base buzzing with excitement.

Said veteran right guard Sam Cosmi: "It was fun to see, and it’s clear we’ve got a special player back there.''

AUG 8 FOLES RETIRES Former Philadelphia Eagles quarterback and Super Bowl MVP Nick Foles has officially called it quits.

“After much thought and prayer, I’ve decided to retire from the NFL,” Foles said on Thursday, announcing the end of a storybook career. “It’s been an incredible 11-year journey filled with unforgettable moments and amazing people.”

Foles will always be known for his stunning 2017 playoff run with the Eagles, when he stepped in for the injured Carson Wentz and then helped guide Philly to the Super Bowl.

AUG 5 LB SIGNED The Philadelphia Eagles are signing former Jacksonville Jaguars linebacker Shaquille Quarterman to a one-year deal.

Quarterman was with the Jags for his first four NFL seasons after having been taken there with the No. 140 overall pick in the fourth round of the 2020 NFL Draft.

His second season there was his best, as he played in 17 games and totaled 30 tackles, including 3.5 tackles for loss.

AUG 5 DEMOTION? Could big-money New York Giants' quarterback Daniel Jones really get demoted to the point where he is splitting first-team reps with young journeyman Drew Lock?

Jones has, by many accounts, been inconsistent in camp. So ...

SNY insider Connor Hughes has proposed that the Giants should consider splitting first-team reps between Jones and Lock. What does the reporter see at camp?

"The quarterback has time. The quarterback has receivers open. He’s not making the plays," Hughes noted.

AUG 5 PROBLEM The New York Jets now have a $1 million problem on their hands.

Haason Reddick, the All-Pro edge rusher who moved from the Eagles to New York in trade - in part because a new contract was assumed - has yet to show up to the Jets facility.

Somebody goofed. Or changed their mind. Or something.

But to this point, it seems Jets have been unwilling to negotiate with a player on holdout. ... and now it's preseason Week 1 and the fine - if a player under contract holds out from a game - is about $1 million.

Reddick views himself as being an underpaid player ... but his wallet is about to get even thinner this week.

MAY 14 EAGLES BEAT WASHINGTON Jason Kelce is in at "Monday Night Football," with Robert Griffin III being shoved aside.

Kelce, the recently retired Eagles icon, is a hot property in part due to his "New Heights'' podcast success. And RGIII? He'll still have a place at ESPN, it is being reported ... but his profile will shrink a bit as Kelce's grows.

MAY 14 BIGGEST IMPACT? NFL.com has issued a list of the "biggest impact'' trade guys and the Eagles are mentioned ... as a "loser'' of sorts.

The list credits the Jets for their acquisition of Reddick, who of course does indeed count as an on-field loss for Philly. But ...

The story doesn't tell the whole story.

Tom Blair of NFL.com's ranking of the 10 traded players who will have the biggest impact has Reddick as the No. 6 guy. That's legit. But the full story is also about Reddick leaving for the Jets while GM Howie Roseman signed a D-line replacement in Bryce Huff away from the Jets ...

Fangio Failure? Eagles Coach Accused of 'Relationship' Problem; Vic Reacts

Meaning, in the eyes of the Eagles, they didn't really "lose'' at all.

MAY 12 LEBRON TD? Jason Kelce’s next act after his Hall of Fame football career with the Philadelphia Eagles is expected to be an analyst on Monday Night Football.

He’s not a general manager. Not, yet. Maybe never.

That doesn’t mean he can’t play one. Kelce suggested that NBA superstar and certain Hall of Fame player in his sport, LeBron James, could be developed into an NFL red-zone threat within a year.

Never mind that James is on the brink of turning 40. Or that he probably wouldn’t be open to the idea. Why would he?

Kelce was simply responding to a debate that was spurred by NBA role player Austin Rivers regarding whether NFL players could hypothetically hold their own in the NBA, and vice versa.

ESPN analyst Ryan Clark chimed in, saying that the mental fortitude required to play football would be too difficult for some NBA players. Kelce disagreed when it came to James.

The former Eagles center went to social media and wrote:

“I love this argument and passion from Ryan, and as a football player my mind is screaming hell yeah!!! But, if I was an NFL GM, and it was an option, I'd sign LeBron today and within one offseason he'd be the greatest red zone threat in the NFL.”

Kelce Reveals 'Guarantee' of Troubling Medical Issue

James’ size certainly makes it an intriguing thought. He is 6-8 and is athletic enough to make a go of it.

The question is, though, at 39, would James want to change careers?

    Not likely.

Kelce never said James would. He was just offering an opinion and may not be done with his foray into the world of being a GM. Already, he seems to be showing some outside-the-box thinking.
