Why Do Eagles Need To Trade for Jets WR Allen Lazard?

    By Mike Fisher,

There is an ongoing drumbeat for the Philadelphia Eagles to add to a wideout room presently topped by AJ Brown and DeVonta Smith. ...

And if the sort of name that is to be added is that of New York Jets vet Allen Lazard?

    We're not sure why.

The Eagles are listed as a possible landing spot for Lazard by USA Today. The logic? The Jets want to add to their roster.

OK. So what does that have to do with the Eagles?

We can make an argument - at least after the Eagles get a bit more time to evaluate what the already have - that another piece would be helpful. But ...

"The New York Jets feel like a team that could make an aggressive trade to add talent this summer to help maximize the remainder of quarterback Aaron Rodgers' career," USA Today said. "With only about $6 million in cap space, that might make a player like Lazard expendable in what will be a crucial season for the Jets.''

    Problems ...

1 - So this is about what the Jets want? Why does Philly care about that?

2 - Last year, Lazard caught 23 passes for 311 yards. Is he really a commodity?

3 - The reason he's on the Jets roster is because he's pals with de facto assistant GM Aaron Rodgers, who moonlights as the team's QB. Has anybody checked with Rodgers on this?

4 - USA Today wants Philly to trade a "late-round pick'' for Lazard (OK) so New York could gain $10 million in cap space (true) "which could easily go to good use to add talent elsewhere on the roster.'' Ah. Difficult ...

Because there aren't that many "easy'' ways once the NFL season starts to "buy'' a $10 million player.

Oh, and by the way: If the Jets traded Lazard - given that he's listed on their depth chart as the third receiver - wouldn't the "$10 million player they go add'' possibly have to be a player who ...

    Plays receiver?

One more thing: Given the status of the Haason Reddick trade from the Eagles to New York ... we're not sure the Jets would even pick up the phone if they realize it's Philly GM Howie Roseman on the other end of the line.
