Jets Penalty Problems Persist: Robert Saleh Speaks Out

The New York Jets were the most penalized team in football last season.

While head coach Robert Saleh has tried different ways to make sure those mistakes aren't repeated in 2024, the organization didn't get off to the best of starts on Saturday.

In their preseason-opening win against the Washington Commanders, New York was called for six penalties, less than their opponent, but still a sign of sloppy play.

Especially since four of the six came in the first quarter.

"We’re always going to stress it," Saleh explained after the win. "I would love to chalk it up to first game nerves, but it’s something that we will keep an eye on."

It appeared to be deja vu on the Jets' opening offensive drive when a solid six-yard run was wiped out due to a false start, and a first-down throw from Tyrod Taylor to Braelon Allen was negated due to an ineligible man downfield call.

New York would buckle down, though with their rookie class leading the way for the 20-17 victory at MetLife Stadium.

With most of the starters not playing, it's easy to agree with Saleh on their approach to how the penalties came about. Should they progress throughout camp, though, the Jets could be facing another discipline problem in 2024.
