San Antonio Spurs to Sign NBA Free Agent With Victor Wembanyama's Support?

The San Antonio Spurs don't have the roster space to add another player for their opening-night lineup unless they trade away a player or bite the bullet and waive a player on a guaranteed contract, eating the cost of their salary. However, with plenty of players on moveable contracts or making low enough salaries that waiving them is theoretically an option, the Spurs have the means to make more moves, even if it is unlikely.

French forward Guerschon Yabusele became a fan-favorite during the Olympics for Team France, as he averaged 14 points, 3.3 rebounds, and an assist during the tournament. Next to Victor Wembanyama, he was one of France's best players, and calls for him to return to the NBA have made their rounds.

Wembanyama, who is easily the most famous French basketball player and the one whose opinion matters the most, seems to think that Yabusele is due to return to the NBA, as he reposted a tweet (also known as X) that called for Yabusele to have an NBA contract signed before the season.

Yabusele played in 74 games for the Boston Celtics over two seasons between 2017-19 before heading back to play in Europe, where he has found some success. However, his Olympic performances have given fans, and front offices, reason to think he is suited for the NBA.

Yabusele scored 20 points against Team USA in the gold medal game and dropped a very efficient 17 points against Germany in the semifinals. At times, he was the best player on the court, and his 6-8, 270lbs frame would be NBA-ready from day one.

While the Spurs are unlikely to sign him, expect NBA teams to start drawing up offers if they haven't already.
