Indianapolis Colts running back Jonathan Taylor has become one of the first players in the history of the National Football League to wear a piece of safety equipment over his helmet in an actual game.

Player safety has become a hot topic around the NFL over the past few years. With many former players coming out and announcing they have been diagnosed with Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE), the league has been finding new ways to limit the number of concussions players have.

In Sunday's preseason opener against the Denver Broncos, Jonathan Taylor wore a Guardian Cap over his helmet to limit the impact to his head as he was tackled by the opposition. The Guardian Cap is a padded covering that attaches to the top of the helmet for added protection.

This past offseason, the NFL implemented a policy that all players besides quarterbacks, kickers, and punters are mandated to wear a Guardian Cap in practices. The league also made it optional for the players to wear one in games.

Pittsburgh Steelers offensive lineman James Daniels became the first official player to wear a Guardian Cap in a game when he took the field Friday night.

With Week 1 of the preseason set to wrap up Sunday afternoon, it will be interesting to see if any other players around the league will follow suit moving forward.
