Which Browns QB Could Become Cut Candidate Following Packers Loss?

    By Harrison Reno,

The Cleveland Browns ' preseason opening 23-10 loss to the Green Bay Packers didn't leave much to write home about, especially regarding the offense.

In their first game, exhibition or not, with new offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey on staff, the Browns found the endzone just once as they struggled to sustain drives.

However, even with the offense providing a rather dull affair for Browns' fans, the performance of second-year quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson was a bright light. It now sparks questions about the future of former Baltimore Ravens backup Tyler Huntley.

With Deshaun Watson watching from the sidelines as he continues to work his way back from last season's shoulder injury, all three of his backups saw action versus the Packers.

The former fifth-round pick was under center for the Browns' sole touchdown drive, as he completed six of his seven passes, setting up the one-yard score for running back Aidan Robbins. Not only was the drive the highlight of the day for the Browns but an example of Thompson-Robinson's effectiveness.

The UCLA product finished the game with 134 yards while completing 14 of his 18 attempts, arguably outperforming his two fellow quarterbacks.

However, Jameis Winston is a close second behind Thompson-Robinson in terms of impressive performances, as he completed four of his five passes for 30 yards in his sole drive that did end with a field goal. Meanwhile, Huntley completed six of his nine passes for 41 yards yet never could help the Browns put points on the board.

While it is still early enough into training camp that a trade or potential release isn't imminent for the Browns, especially at the quarterback position, a battle for the emergency third quarterback role will be something to monitor in the coming weeks.

Given the starting experience he gained last season, combined with his impressive performance Saturday, the former fifth-round pick seems to be the current favorite to beat out Huntley for the job.
