The Dallas Cowboys’ preseason opener against the Los Angeles Rams was a battle to the very end for their defense. While the Cowboys' defense delivered an impressive four interceptions, three of which targeted Rams receiver Sam Wiglusz , a late-game lapse allowed the Rams to snatch a last-second 13-12 victory.

The defense’s strong start was evident from the first quarter, when safety Markquese Bell intercepted Rams quarterback Stetson Bennett , picking off a pass intended for wide receiver Jordan Whittington at the Rams' 44-yard line. This early turnover set the tone for a Cowboys defense that seemed poised to dominate.

As the first half drew to a close, rookie cornerback Eric Scott Jr . added to the Cowboys' interception tally with a critical red-zone pick, snatching a pass intended for Rams receiver Wiglusz and returning it 26 yards. This key play highlighted Scott’s ability to step up in clutch moments, preventing the Rams from gaining momentum before halftime.

The second half saw the Cowboys continue their ball-hawking ways, with rookie safety Julius Woods intercepting another pass aimed at Wiglusz late in the third quarter. Woods’ pick, deep down the middle of the field, marked the third interception of the day and emphasized the Cowboys' defensive prowess.

The final interception came from rookie linebacker Brock Mogensen , who picked off Bennett once more, this time returning the ball 23 yards to the Rams' 23-yard line. With four interceptions, the Cowboys’ defense appeared to be the deciding factor in the game.

However, despite the strong start, the Cowboys' defense faltered when it mattered most. With just 2:52 remaining on the clock, the Rams orchestrated a methodical drive that culminated in a game-winning touchdown with four seconds left. The Cowboys, who had led 12-6, saw their early defensive heroics undone in the final moments.

While the Cowboys' defense showed great potential and playmaking ability early in the game, the late collapse underscores the need for consistency as they prepare for the 2024 season.
