NBA All-Star In Disbelief Over Noah Lyles' Anthony Edwards Jab
By Paolo Songco,
Noah Lyles was not part of the Team USA contingent that won the gold medal in the men's 5x5 basketball tournament. However, he was still one of the first personalities who trended on social media the moment LeBron James and Co. bagged the gold medal.
Lyles' previous comments questioning the NBA's use of the term "world champions" immediately resurfaced after Team USA won the gold in the Paris Olympics. Even USA Basketball's official X account took a shot at the decorated sprinter when they tweeted out, "Are we the World Champs now?"
On Sunday, Lyles made headlines again after another one of his controversial statements came to light. In a June 27 article published by TIME, it was revealed that the 27-year-old recently took a shot at Team USA star Anthony Edwards during the latter's Adidas shoe launch.
“You want to do what?” Lyles responded when he was invited to Edwards' shoe-release event. “You want to invite me to [an event for] a man who has not even been to an NBA Finals ? In a sport that you don’t even care about? And you’re giving him a shoe?
"No disrespect: the man is an amazing athlete. He is having a heck of a year. I love that they saw the insight to give him a shoe, because they saw that he was going to be big. All I’m asking is, ‘How could you not see that for me?’”
For most fans, this was Lyles taking a blatant shot at Edwards and the latter's lack of championship success in the NBA.
New York Knicks superstar Jalen Brunson caught wind of the quote, and the All-Star point guard was left in disbelief at what he thought was a joke.
"Damn I thought this was Centel," Brunson tweeted in reference to parody account NBACentel. The
The quote is 100% real, which makes this situation even more bizarre. Even Brunson himself couldn't initially believe that Lyles would come out with such a statement.
It would be easy to have the same opinion for anyone who isn't too familiar with Lyles. Those who are aware of his antics, however, will know that this is pretty much on-brand for the polarizing track and field superstar.
