Giants QB Controversy? New York Sports Radio Debates Who Should Start Week 1

    By Nick Faria,

The dog days of NFL training camp usually mean there's not much to talk about in the build-up to the new season.

Most sports radio shows will look for anything to try and find a way to fill out 24 hours of programming.

For WFAN -- the top sports talk station in New York City -- their new idea of finding ways to create programming is to make up stories for pure viewership.

In an odd twist, the primetime show with Evan Roberts and Tiki Barber (with Tommy Lugauer filling in) actually debated whether the New York Giants should stick with Daniel Jones as the team's starting quarterback or if they should move on to fan-favorite Tommy DeVito .

"DeVito has the support of the fans; I want to start with that first and foremost. He is the most well-liked guy by all the fans," Lugauer said . "I think when he's out there, the Giants move the football. I think he has a lot that we have not seen yet. I think he has untapped potential...I think when you look at Daniel Jones, a guy that has struggled to stay healthy, and a guy that has struggled to play consistent football, I look towards Tommy DeVito ."

While Barber did say he sided with Jones, the whole conversation is ridiculous. Jones signed a four-year deal with the Giants just two years ago and has the backing of the locker room and the front office, even after the spring's search for a rookie passer.

More than anything else, Tommy DeVito's numbers were not impressive when context is added (23.7 quarterback rating). He still has not shown enough to claim the starting job for the Giants.

WFAN may be bored with its focus on baseball, but it's clear their latest debate might be one of the outlandish ones in recent memory.
