Drew Lock Injury Update: Giants QB Confident for Regular Season

Despite leaving Thursday’s preseason game against the Detroit Lions prematurely, New York Giants quarterback Drew Lock remains confident he’ll be ready for the regular season, if not sooner.

Lock left the 14-3 Giants win after taking multiple hits, ultimately departing with hip and oblique ailments.

New York decided not to sign a quarterback in free agency to take his spot in practice for the week and potentially play Saturday against the Houston Texans. Instead, it opted for tight end Tyree Jackson to serve as the emergency quarterback if need be.

On Monday, Lock gave a brief, but reassuring, update on his health.

“I’ve been getting better every day,” Lock said, via SNY . “Me and Dabes (head coach Brian Daboll) have talked, we’re not ruling out the possibility of playing. Again, go out there, throw, see how it feels, been doing that. Doing it today, gonna do it tomorrow, do it the next day … If the opportunity is there and we both feel comfortable with it (Lock will play).”

His status in Houston isn’t guaranteed, and the Giants may opt to let him rest anyway. Even so, that’s good news from the backup quarterback.

When asked about his availability for the regular season, Lock remained steadfast about his readiness.

“100 percent confident. There’s no worry in that,” Lock said . “How I felt yesterday, how I felt today, there’s no worry about that.”

Given the hits Lock sustained, New York is fortunate to have dodged a bullet. While he may not play Saturday, it would be nice to see him in game action before the regular season begins. Lock struggled against Detroit, completing just four of 10 passes with a sack and an interception.

He was outplayed by third-string quarterback Tommy DeVito, who is hoping to make this a real competition for the QB2 spot. With Lock earning a $5 million contract in free agency this spring, it’ll probably take more than some preseason reps to reorder the depth chart .
