USA Gymnastics 'Deeply Disappointed' By Latest Ruling On Jordan Chiles Medal Scandal

Not long after the Court of Arbitration for Sport announced on Saturday that it was voiding the American protest that resulted in Jordan Chiles moving from fifth to third and earning a bronze medal in the floor exercise final of the Paris Olympics, USA Gymnastics announced it would appeal the decision.
Later Saturday, the International Gymnastics Federation, which governs the sport, announced Romania's Ana Barbosu had been reinstated to the bronze medal position in accordance with the CAS decision. That prompted the International Olympic Committee to rule on Sunday that Chiles would have to return her medal from the event.
On Monday, USA Gymnastics announced via X, formerly Twitter, that the CAS had rejected its plea. This means Chiles will have to return her medal so it can be awarded to Barbosu.
"USA Gymnastics was notified by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) on Monday that their rules do not allow for an arbitral award to be reconsidered even when conclusive new evidence is presented," the statement read.
Monday's decision likely brings an end to a tumultous sequence of events that started when Chiles received an initial score of 13.666 in the floor exercise final on Monday.
That score placed her fifth, four one-thousandths of a point behind Barbosu, who had scored 13.700 for her routine. However, U.S. team coach Cecile Landi challenged the difficulty score assigned to one of Chiles' moves in the hope of raising her score enough to put her on the medals podium. The appeal to the event judges succeeded. Chiles was given an extra 0.10 points as a result of the inquiry, giving her a 13.766 score and the bronze medal.

That prompted Romania to angrily file an appeal to the CAS. According to the court's investigation during that appeal, Landi's appeal came four seconds after the one-minute deadline, thereby making her challenge invalid.
As a result of the CAS ruling, the International Gymnastics Federation put Barbosu back in third, Sabrina Voinea in fourth and Chiles in fifth. Voinea had the same 13.700 score as Barbosu, but lost the tiebreaker between the two (execution score).
In its appeal of the Court of Arbitration for Sport's ruling, USA Gymnastics reportedly submitted evidence that the onsite appeal by Landi was made within the allowed time frame. As the above tweet indicates, however, CAS has confirmed it is unable to act despite the presentation of new evidence.
What is clear, though, is USA Gymnastics is not giving up the fight. It will do everything in its power to ensure Chiles retains her bronze medal.
