Chicago Sky Make Decision On Marina Mabrey Replacement

The Chicago Sky will emerge from a long break with Marina Mabrey no longer part of their roster. Mabrey was traded by the Sky to the Connecticut Sun for Moriah Jefferson, Rachel Banham, and a first-round pick in 2025 last July. The Sky also got the rights to swap 2026 picks in the first round of the 2026 WNBA draft with the Sun.

With the deal already done, one question for the Sky is how will they be able to cover the void left on their starting unit by Mabrey. The Sky apparently already have an answer to that in the form of forward Michaela Onyenwere.

‘‘You all saw Michaela at the end of the first half of the season and how well she was playing for us,’’ Chicago head coach Teresa Weatherspoon said (via Annie Costabile of the Chicago Sun-Times) .

‘‘She’s so versatile. I’ve said this since the beginning, but she’s probably the most versatile player we have as far as the positions that she can play.’’

Onyenwere is only averaging 3.6 points, 0.8 rebounds, and 0.4 assists per game so far in the 2024 WNBA regular season, but over her last three outings, she managed to put up 9.0 points on an incredible 91.7 percent shooting from the floor. That stretch includes her 14-point performance in a loss to the New York Liberty at home on July 14.

Onyenwere is also perhaps being motivated by her contract situation, as she is set to become a restricted free agent in 2025.

The 10-14 Sky will return to action this coming Thursday with a game at home versus the Phoenix Mercury.
