"ESPN is entering the end of its fiscal year, where it typically makes these types of decisions," Marchand reported. "Griffin’s stock had fallen, making him a prime candidate to be let go. While his seven-figure-per-year salary will be honored, his role had diminished to a point where ESPN decided to not keep him on.
Samantha Ponder , wife of former NFL QB Christian Ponder, was also let go in what Marchand described as "budget moves."
Griffin, known for his charisma and big social media personality, chose to join ESPN in 2021 despite interest from FOX Sports.
Hours before the news broke on Thursday, the 34-year-old posted a somewhat cryptic message on X.
"There are people in your circle saying they want you to win, but doing everything they can to make you lose," Griffin wrote. "Don’t be afraid to cut people off when they keep handing you the scissors."
Fans on social media also took notice of a few other recent posts.
"Dude said this yesterday and then espn fired him today," one fan wrote in reference to Griffin's August 13 X post defending Florida State football.
"Buddy defended FSU and got fired a couple days later. ESPN’s messaging has never been more clear," another fan added .

Referencing Griffin's viral August 9 video , another fan wrote : "RG3 posted in defense of Imane Khelif recently while she was being attacked and now he’s fired, yet Dan Orlovsky was on some “protect our daughters” bull crap during that whole charade and he’s still employed by ESPN. HMMMMMMMMMM. Curious, @espn. Very curious indeed."
The former No. 2 overall pick in the 2012 NFL draft hasn't played in an NFL game since December 2020 with the Baltimore Ravens.
However, he told The Dan Patrick Show in October 2023 that he would entertain a return and was even contacted by an NFL team about it in "mid-August" last year.
