Chicago Sky star Chennedy Carter has been ruled out of the team's matchup against the Phoenix Mercury on Thursday.

The Sky reported Carter will miss the game just a few hours before tip-off, which is currently set at 8 p.m. ET.

Chicago listed Carter's absence as a non-COVID illness. She'll be sidelined, along with talented center Elizabeth Williams.

Head coach Teresa Weatherspoon has yet to comment on the decision to sit Carter, but it seemed to have been an abrupt choice for Chicago since the first-year Sky star took part in team practice this week.

Heading into the second half of the WNBA season, Carter leads the Sky in scoring, currently averaging 17.2 points per game.

She serves as Chicago's lead guard in the starting lineup after beginning the season as a role player for Weatherspoon. Carter's starting role began about a month after the season tipped off; she's started 12 of the Sky's 24 games.

Despite the loss of Chennedy Carter, the Sky have a couple of talented options behind her, like rookies Angel Reese and Kamilla Cardoso, who will likely play a large role in the matchup.

The Sky will have their hands full, playing against star veterans like Brittney Griner, Diana Taurasi, and Kahleah Copper, who are fresh off winning a gold medal with Team USA in the Summer Olympics.

Carter's next opportunity to be plugged back into the lineup will be on Saturday at 5 p.m. ET against the Los Angeles Sparks.
