Eagles Need A Better Backup Plan Than Kenny Pickett

In case it wasn't clear before, it is now.

Kenny Pickett may not be the quarterback the Philadelphia Eagles thought they were getting when they traded a 2024 third-round pick to the Pittsburgh Steelers this offseason.

In the hopes of acquiring a young backup quarterback with plenty of starting experience, Pickett was seen as an above .500 starting quarterback who could replace Jalen Hurts in case of injury.

Through two preseason games, though, it's pronounced that the Eagles haven't been pleased with what they have seen in the Pittsburgh product.

Pickett went 11-13 passing in the first half of the Eagles' second preseason game against the New England Patriots while leading a single-field goal drive. He was also sacked four times during that period.

Pickett's night was marred by holding onto the ball too long in plays that resulted in sacks, while also checking down throws. His five yards per reception is well below league standard and showed the third-year quarterback just isn't comfortable in the Eagles offense.

It also doesn't help that second-year quarterback Tanner McKee has looked far better and more relaxed in the offense. At one point, the sixth-round pick from 2023 had more passing yards thrown (without a sack) in five fewer passing attempts.

Philadelphia may want to continue to try and use Pickett as the backup quarterback to Hurts, but it's obvious the Pittsburgh star has been taken over in the depth chart by McKee.
